Making a trade

Explore placing a trade, extended hours trading, and orders on the Questrade Trading platform.

Making a trade is easy and requires a few simple steps.

Questrade Trading Symbol Lookup Bar

Head to the Symbol Lookup bar and enter the stock or ETF's symbol or name. A list will appear in the search box, and you can select the ticker symbol you wish to trade.

Questrade Trading QQQ Quote Page

Here, you will see information about the stock, or ETF, including a historical performance chart, and key Statistics below (dividends, P/E, Volume, etc.).

Questrade Trading Quote Window

Choose to Buy or Sell button on the quote window.

  • If you have multiple self-directed accounts, select which account to buy and hold securities in.

Select the type of order you would like to use and then "Next".

  • A limit order lets you set your preferred buy/sell price for the stock/ETF.
  • A market order lets you buy/sell at the current market price.

Note: If you’re looking to use advanced order types (including trailing stop orders, bracket orders, etc.), please use Questrade Edge Web.

Enter the number of shares you want to buy, then select Next.

Lastly, select Place order to enter the trade if you chose a Market order.

  • For a limit order, you will set the highest price you want to pay per share before placing your order.

To buy a stock or ETF from your watchlist or account holdings table below, click on the ticker symbol of your choice and then select the Buy/Sell option on the following screen.

Note: You can also access the Questrade Trading page by clicking Trading on the top navigation page or selecting an account under the summary page.

Orders

On the trading page, just below the chart and balances, is the Orders table showing your recent orders and statuses.

QT Orders Tab
  1. The first column shows the Symbol and a description of the security.
  2. The Status column shows the order’s status. These are the available options:
    • Accepted means the order has been sent to and received by the relevant exchange, but you do not own the stock or ETF yet. The order waits for a matching Bid or Ask before it either executes or expires.
      • Accepted orders can be adjusted using the pencil icon.
    • Executed means that the order has been successfully completed. At this point, you own the stock or ETF, and the order can no longer be modified.
    • Replaced shows when an order has been replaced by another order.
    • Cancelled refers to an order that has been cancelled outright.
  3. The Action column shows whether it was a Buy or Sell order.
Questrade Trading Orders Page
  1. Order type shows what type of order was used (Market, limit or other).
  2. The Limit price column shows the limit price you bought or sold at (if a limit order was used).
  3. Duration shows what order duration was used for the order (DAY, GTC or other).
  4. Qty shows how many shares were bought or sold, and how much of the order filled.
    • Some large orders may fill in multiple stages if a single Bid or Ask isn’t large enough to accommodate how many shares you buy or sell.
  5. The fill price shows what the final fill (or execution) price was for the order.
  6. Time and date is the last column which shows the time the order was placed.

Tip: If you click on any table header (i.e. Symbol, status, etc.) you can customize the view and order by ascending or descending.

If you’re looking to trade during extended trading hours, use advanced order types (including trailing stop orders, bracket orders, etc.) and durations, please use Questrade Edge Web.

Extended Trading Hours

Take advantage of Pre and Post-Market trading opportunities within the Questrade Trading platform.

North American stock markets operate from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm ET, Monday to Friday. However, pre and post-market trading sessions are also available from 7 am ET to 8 pm ET, allowing you to respond to news outside of regular hours.

QT Quote Window

To trade during extended hours on the Questrade trading platform:

Select a limit order from the Order entry window on the Trading page (as seen above in steps 1-6).

Select the arrow on the right to change the Order duration to Good till ext. market (GTEM), then place your order.

  1. Order duration determines how long your trade order remains active before it gets filled or expires. If it isn't executed within the set time, it's automatically cancelled.
  2. Good till ext. market means your trade order remains active for the entire trading day, including regular and extended trading hours.

Pre-market trading for Canadian securities is unavailable, and there are only limited options for post-market trading of Canadian stocks and ETFs.
